One horned Indian Rhinoceros

Indian Rhinoceros are second giant Rhinoceros in rhino species. It is second big size animal in Aisa. One-horned Indian Rhinoceros also know as Greater One-horned Rhinoceros. It belong to Rhinocerotodae family also called Rhinoceros Unicornis. One-horned Rhinoceros are listed in vulnerable species. Today about 3000 rhinoceros are live in wild among more than 2500 are found in India, At Kaziranga National Park itself has 2329 rhinoceros.

One-horned Indian Rhinoceros are usually found in Indo-Gangetic Plain, as rhino love to be in grassland or wet land to keep body warm. It is sad to say that their natural habitat are reducing drastically because of hunting in region and human intervention into jungle. Male Rhinoceros are usually bigger than female. The largest sized specimens can be up to 4000 kg.

The Indian Rhinoceros has different body structure than other rhinoceros species. It is Thick, silver-brown skin and large skin fold that cover it body. Upper body is cover in wart like bump. Rhino has very little hair in body except eyelashes, ear fringes and tail brush. Male has thick neck folds, which make it more attractive.

Populations of One-horned Indian Rhinoceros India -

In 2007, the total population was estimated to be 2,575 individuals, of which 2,200 lived in Indian protected areas:
1. Kaziranga National Park
: 2329 (2012 estimate) — increased from 366 in 1966
2. Jaldapara National Park : 108 — increased from 84 in 2002
3. Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary : 81 — increased from 54 in 1987
4. Orang National Park : 68 — increased from 35 in 1972
5. Gorumara : 27 — increased from 22 in 2002
6.Dudhwa National Park : 21
7. Manas National Park : 19
8. Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary : 2

Indian Forest Department is doing very well job to conservation of this endangered animal. But still they lack on technology and finance. Recently Assam Government introduced the unmanned air vehicle and hi-tech collar to find the exact location of rhino and study their activity. But because of lack of fund the project is keep in hold. In year 2013's first three month 30 Rhino are killed this year. Poaching and Human intervention in jungle big problem to department.
